Connor Hamlett, TE, Oregon State – 2015

Positives: Great 6’7″ height and good bulk for the height and position. He has good speed for his size and above-average speed for the position. Shows good body control and hand-eye coordination, and adjusts very well to off-target passes. Nice concentration on tipped passes. He has natural hands and can extend and snag passes away from frame. Not easy to bring down after the catch. As a run blocker, he is much more effective and can drive defenders back when he can just go straight ahead and not have to slide his feet. Shows good effort for extra yards. Seems fairly tough, and played in 2013 bowl game one week after knee surgery.

Negatives: Runs with a lumbering stride despite his long speed. Below-average lateral quickness. Adequate at best as a run blocker, and loses balance easily – can get bowled off his feet by a strong defensive lineman and has trouble staying with quicker defenders due to his lack of lateral quickness. Two knee injuries in 2013.

Projection: Round 7. Would make for a nice weapon in the red zone if he can improve his run blocking skills.

Gerald Christian, TE, Louisville – 2015

Was a redshirt senior. 2012 transfer from Florida.

All-Star Games: Shrine Game.

Positives: Is willing to fight through traffic to get into his routes. Generally good hands – also shows good hands and concentration on contested passes and when contact is coming. Above-average hand-eye coordination, and tracks passes fairly well over his outside shoulder. Is able to slide to ground to get low passes. Not easy to bring down after the catch.

Negatives: Below-average height and bulk for the position, and is built more like an H-back. Below-average speed and athleticism for the position and size. Though he showed good concentration in games I saw, he had concentration issues in the Combine gauntlet drill and double-clutched another during other drills. Doesn’t sustain blocks. Doesn’t quickly adjust his routes for off-target passes.

Projection: Round 7.

Jon Davis, FB/TE, Illinois – 2015

Positives: Good height and bulk for a fullback. His game speed is adequate, but he showed above-average track speed for the position, and good for the size – maybe he can improve his game speed? Has adequate hands and generally above-average body control – can adjust fairly well to passes thrown behind him. Is also nimble on the sidelines and has good balance after contact. Fair open-field vision for extra yards and shows good effort after the catch. Has above-average balance when making cuts.  As a fullback, it is a fair blocker who seals out well. Blocks well on outside runs downfield.

Negatives: As a tight end, he’s more of an H-back size. Didn’t show much lateral or change-of-direction quickness. Below-average upper-body strength. As a fullback, he runs too upright and out of balance. Isn’t an overpowering blocker, and will be knocked backward on impact at times.

Projection: UDFA. He has the ball skills to be a factor in a passing game as a fullback, but he needs to work on his blocking to make a roster as either a fullback or tight end.

Wes Saxton, TE, South Alabama – 2015

All-Star Games: Shrine Game.

Positives: Very good speed for the position, and gets off the line quickly. Okay downfield blocker. Can track and extend pretty well over his inside shoulder. Not afraid to go over the middle despite his lack of size. Above-average hand size.

Negatives: Doesn’t have the size to be a typical in-line tight end, with H-back height and bulk. Below-average in-line run blocker who will lower his head and lean against defender, making him easy to pull off his feet. Below-average upper-body strength. Suspect attention and wasn’t ready for a pass over the middle in Shrine Game practices. Below-average hands, concentration and blocking skills in Shrine Game practices. Needs more separation coming out of his breaks.

Projection: Round 5.

Clive Walford, TE, Miami – 2015

All-Star Games: Senior Bowl.

Positives: Adequate height and bulk for the position, but great hand size. Runs with above-average speed. His routes are crisp and he accelerates quickly out of his breaks to get separation. Has generally good hands and can extend very well for passes away from his body – snagging fast passes even in wet conditions. After the catch, he shows above-average power and isn’t easy to bring down. Is able to hold the ball with the big hit. Pretty good concentration in traffic.

Negatives: Below-average hand-eye coordination and agility and has trouble adjusting to off-target passes. Suspect run blocking ability, and he will try to cut block when he should probably just drive through defenders. Injured knee in November 2014 and missed unknown amount of time. Reportedly showed poor attitude in Combine interviews.

Projection: Round 3. He’s one of the better receivers at tight end this year, and has the athleticism to be a passing game weapon. But his deficiencies in blocking may keep him off the field.

Marlin Lane, RB, Tennessee – 2015

All-Star Games: Was on the original NFLPA Game roster, but not in the game.

Positives: Very good height and adequate bulk for the position. Runs with adequate speed and burst and is able to turn inside runs into outside runs. Very patient behind line and shows adequate cutback vision. Above-average vertical leap. Not easy to bring down, and shows above-average strength. Throws a nice pass with adequate arm strength and accuracy through wide windows.

Negatives: Suspended by team in spring 2013 practices for a short time for disciplinary reasons. Though he showed adequate game speed and quickness, he showed poor track speed and below-average explosiveness in his Pro Day workouts. Though a patient runner, he borders on indecisive. Gets caught running a little bit too upright behind the line at times.

Projection: UDFA.

Dreamius Smith, RB/PR, West Virginia – 2015

Junior college transfer in 2013.

Positives: Has good height and bulk for the position. He runs with adequate burst and speed. Pretty good ability to stop his momentum and get back up to speed quickly. Though he doesn’t show much agility, he is able to spin away from contact at times. Generates above-average power and keeps churning after contact. Keeps his feet moving quickly through traffic to allow himself to make moves. Follows blockers well.

Negatives: Not creative – misses a lot of cutback chances. Not very agile in general, and runs a little bit off balance. Okay hands. Below-average decisions as a punt returner and will fair catch the ball at the 5-yard line.

Projection: UDFA.

Akeem Hunt, RB/KR/PR, Purdue – 2015

All-Star Games: Medal of Honor Bowl.

Positives: Adequate height for the position. Runs with above-average long speed and adequate burst, cutback vision, and acceleration. Ran a very good time in the short shuttle at his Pro Day – maybe his lateral quickness is fixable? Runs with high knees through the line, and churns pretty well through contact for extra yards. Patient behind the line in short-yardage situations.

Negatives: Below-average bulk for the position, and is built more like a slot wide receiver. Seems to have below-average lateral quickness. Below-average hands and drops some easy ones. Runs a little bit out of control. Needs to give more effort on off-target passes.

Projection: UDFA.

Desmond Roland, RB, Oklahoma State – 2015

Positives: Above-average burst and quickness. Above-average cutback vision. Above-average balance after contact. Is a decisive one-cut-and-go runner. Seems fairly agile in the open field. Picks his way through traffic at the line well. Can dig his foot into the ground and jump cut around defenders behind the line. Keeps churning and runs determined. Keeps moving forward even when making moves. Okay hands. Seems to improve over the course of a game as he gets the rhythm.

Negatives: Below-average speed. Seems slow to make decisions when outside runs are plugged. Not much leg drive even though he churns. Below-average ball security and holds the ball too low through the line. Though his hands are adequate, he tends to body catch. Lowers his head through the line and will lose balance. Suspect balance making big cuts.

Projection: UDFA.

Akeem Daniels, RB/KR, Northern Illinois – 2015

Was a redshirt senior.

Positives: A versatile athlete who worked at WR, RB, and KR in college – was also a gunner on punt returns. Runs with above-average speed and burst. Quick, and hits the hole decisively both on running plays and on kick returns. Fights for extra yards and has an effective stiff arm. Good body lean through the line. Is an above-average pass blocker who shows good effort at it. Tracks passes well.

Negatives: Below-average size. Below-average hands and has trouble with fast passes. Will put himself in the wrong position at times as a pass protector and with flat feet. Foot surgery in 2013 and missed season.

Projection: UDFA.
