2010 NFL Draft QB Rankings, 21-94

  1. Levi Brown: Bills, 7th round. Troy: Good size. Streaky accuracy. Average arm strength and speed. Knows when to throw ball away. Athletic. 3/4 release and often pushes the ball rather than having complete arm motion. Good accuracy on move. Checks down to secondary receivers. In Texas vs. Nation practice, late on reads. In game, seemed nervous under pressure. Below-average touch deep. Locked on WR. Looks unwilling to run. Inconsistent release point led to some overthrows. May make team as 3rd QB, but doesn’t have NFL future.
  2. Tim Hiller: Colts, UDFA. W. Mich.: Great size. Some durability issues, but has played well with pain. Fairly accurate. OK mechanics, but could use some work. A statue QB who has OK pocket movement, but is not effective on the move. Works spread offense most of the time, but has a little experience under center. Said to be a student of the game. In Texas vs. Nation practice, showed below-average arm strength. Fairly accurate on short to medium routes. Indecisive and nervous under pressure. Adequate mobility. Checks down too often. Bad decisions and doesn’t read defenders well. Footwork looks good under center. Doesn’t place ball well on short touch passes. Very much like Curtis Painter on the Colts, and will battle him and Willy for last spot on team.
  3. Thaddeus Lewis: Rams, UDFA. Duke: Short, but has good bulk. In Texas vs. Nation practice, showed OK arm strength. Mechanics are very inconsistent, leading to inaccuracy at all levels. Forces ball when under pressure. In game, fairly accurate short. Fumbled. Good touch. Not likely to make Rams or any other NFL team.
  4. Isaiah “Juice” Williams: Bears, FA Tryout. Ill.: Slightly below-average height, but good bulk and speed for the position. Not likely to make team behind Cutler, Hanie, and LeFevour.
    1. Todd Reesing: Kan.: Measures at 5’10” tall. In Shrine Game practices, worked well outside pocket, but lacks size to be effective within pocket. Sets up well in pocket, though. Sub-par arm. Fairly accurate on run. Hesitant decision making. Deep ball floats too much. When on run, doesn’t keep eyes open for receiver. Very athletic and hard to catch. Sidearm delivery at times. Good play fakes.
  5. Tyler Sheehan: Texans, UDFA. Bowling Green: Average size. Lots of short hops during bowl game. Several bad decisions when pressured, but did well in the clutch. Stares down receivers. Inaccurate on the move and the pocket. Nice touch. Average windup. Steps into throws. Will compete with Booty for 3rd QB position, but probably won’t make it.
  6. Tim Buckley: Falcons, UDFA. Alcorn St.: Good arm and touch. Great speed. Average decision-making skills. Slow setup and delivery and a little inaccurate. Should compete with Shockley and Ward for 4th QB or practice-squad position. Could have a future on right team.
  7. AJ McKenna: Saints, UDFA. Albany St.: Good speed and great size. Good on the run. Productive at ECB, but showed poor pocket presence at HBCU Senior Bowl. 2009 SIAC MVP. Likely just a warm body for training camp, but may compete with Daniel for last QB spot. Likely cut.
  8. Greg Paulus: Saints, FA Tryout. Syracuse: Slightly below-average size. Average speed and athleticism. Starter in 2009 after transferring from Duke after graduation. Said to need work on reading defenses.

  13. Alex Brink: Jets, FA Tryout – 2009 draft class. Wash. St.:
  14. Donovan Porterie: Lions, FA Tryout. N.M.:
  15. Andrew Schmitt: Lions, FA Tryout. E. Mich.:
  16. Riley Skinner: Giants, UDFA. Wake Forest: Below-average height, athleticism and quickness, but has adequate bulk. Reportedly has good accuracy and decision making. Competing for practice-squad spot or potentially to replace Bomar as #3..
  17. Noah Shepard: Packers, UDFA. S. Dak.: Good size. Excellent upper-body strength. May beat Pizzotti as 3rd QB, but behind Rodgers and Flynn, not much of a future in Green Bay.
  18. Billy Cundiff: Bengals, UDFA. Ashland: Slightly below-average size. Average athleticism. Good upper-body strength.
  19. Rush “RJ” Archer: Vikings, UDFA. William & Mary: Average size. Above-average speed and athleticism. Deciding between baseball and football. Won’t beat Perilloux as 3rd QB.
  20. Eric Ward: Falcons, UDFA. Richmond: Was in Jets camp for tryout, but not signed. Then, signed with Falcons in early May.
  21. Casey Dick: Dolphins, FA Tryout. Ark.:

  23. Curtis Pulley: Fla. A&M: Great height, speed and athleticism. Thin build and needs to add muscle. At least adequate arm strength. Finalist for the Walter Payton Award that went to Armanti Edwards. Pretty good rushing numbers against top college competition. In HBCU Senior Game, but did not play. Long delivery and a little streaky with accuracy. Suspect decision making. Slight legal troubles in 2008. SF has shown interest. Have not seen.

Inaccurate most of the time, though showed some accuracy on the move. Weak downfield arm. Not a fast or strong runner, but is willing to throw body around. Locks onto receiver every throw. Moves well in pocket. Doesn’t read defenses very well. Inconsistent decision-making. Good timing on short routes. In Cactus Bowl, was game MVP. Just over 50% passing with 6YPA. Team’s 2nd-leading rusher. Game took place in his hometown, so take this with a grain of salt.
  33. Brad Iciek: Grand Valley St.: Three-time Harlan Hill finalist. Good running speed and vision. Handles ball well on play fakes. Consistent mechanics, but only average arm strength. Smart enough to throw ball away, but not accurate. In Cactus Bowl, had horrible numbers. On 14 attempts, had only 2 completions and 35 yards. Tends to get tunnel vision. Below-average size.
  34. Patrick Pinkney: E. Car.: Short for a QB. Has problems with mechanics and a very long windup. Slaps ball before every pass. Poor pocket presence. Inaccurate. Has a hard time throwing ball away. OK runner, though.

2010 NFL Draft RB Rankings, 22-176

  1. Curtis Steele: Ravens, UDFA. Memphis: Good height, but a little thin. In Texas vs. Nation practice, showed good inside running instincts and the speed to break it outside. Good balance and forward lean. Very quick feet and good stop-and-start. Runs tough. Good hands as receiver. Gets very small through the line. Fair blocker. Average track speed, athleticism and upper-body strength. In crowded backfield, and only has potential if team releases McGahee. Practice squad likely. (7)
  2. Abdul “Deji” Karim: Jaguars, 6th round. S. Ill.: A little short, but has good bulk. Built low to the ground and strong upper and lower body. Showed good balance, vision and forward lean. 4.4 speed and excellent athleticism. Strong and patient on inside runs and shows good burst. Good hands. Very productive at the I-AA level. Average quickness. Should be their 3rd RB and may even compete with Jennings for touches. (6)
  3. Shawnbrey McNeal: Chargers, UDFA. SMU: Slightly below-average height, bulk, and speed. Below-average quickness in pro day drills. Transferred from Miami after sophomore season. Reportedly good vision and elusiveness, but apparently didn’t show good moves at pro day. (7)
  4. Damion Fletcher: S. Miss.: Good height, but lacks bulk. Tough for his size. Has been a workhorse through career. Quick, with good burst through hole and strong burst in pro day drills. Average speed. Strong legs. Good receiver and has good vision. Fights for tough yardage. May be 3rd-down back. Very weak upper body.
  5. Jason Harmon: FA. Fla. Atlantic: FB size, but played TE in college. Very athletic with good wingspan. Good burst off the line and good speed. Great concentration and body control. Fights for ball. Not much of a blocker. Below-average upper-body strength. Dropped TD pass in Texas vs. the Nation game. Signed by Jaguars as UDFA but waived in early August.
  6. Javarris James: Colts, UDFA. Miami: Good height and adequate bulk. Average speed and quickness. Some durability issues. Got little going on ground in bowl game, though was effective as a receiver. In Shrine Game practices, showed versatility and instincts, as well as patience in setting up blocks inside and good burst through hole in zone blocking scheme. Was natural receiver and route runner. Runs a little upright. Showed little power or burst in Shrine Game. As cousin of Edgerrin James, has knowledge of Colts team. Could stick as 3rd RB. Minimal fantasy relevance behind Addai and Brown.
  7. Chane Moline: Raiders, UDFA. UCLA: Mike Alstott type of FB. Good runner and receiver. Battering ram with a head of steam. No burst, but has shifty feet. Good size. Nice pass blocker. Protects ball well going through hole. May be good short-yardage back at the least in NFL. Good game awareness. Will compete with Tonga and Russell for backup FB spot. May eventually take over for Lorenzo Neal as starter, but not likely to be fantasy relevant if used that way.
  8. Manase Tonga: Raiders, UDFA. BYU: Tough inside runner who keeps feet moving after contact. Good forward lean for short-yardage back. Below-average speed, but has nimble feet. Will compete with Moline and Russell for backup FB spot. Likely destined for practice squad.
  9. Darius Marshall: FA. Marshall: Slightly below-average size. Below-average track speed, quickness, and athleticism. Average upper-body strength. Invited to try out with Buccaneers in May, but wasn’t signed. (FA)
  10. Alfonso Smith: Cardinals, UDFA. Ky.: Good size. Great track speed. Above-average athleticism, but below-average quickness. Invisible during bowl game. In Texas vs. Nation practice, showed patience and good burst. Keeps legs moving after contact. Runs tough. Inconsistent hands. Balance and vision looked sub-par in game. Not much wiggle. Similar game to Beanie Wells, and should stick as 4th RB. Has fantasy relevance in time-share if Wells gets injured.
  11. Brandon James: Colts, UDFA. Fla.: Mostly a KR/PR type. Very small — maybe too small to be effective in pros except as 3rd-down back and returner. Gets up to speed quickly. Good receiver with good vision, which helps in the return game. Not likely to make team except as KR, and then only if he beats out Guice for that job.
  12. Keith Toston: Rams, UDFA. Okla. St.: Good size. Has a low center of gravity, and looks like he’d make a good short-yardage back, but he was stopped three times at goal line in bowl game. Not fast or quick, and isn’t a great blocker. Seemed easy to bring down — not many yards after contact. In Shrine Game practices, showed better quickness and speed. Good ball security, body control and balance, though he wore down toward the end of the week and in game. Could stick as 2nd RB, but not starter material.
  13. LaRon Council: Vikings, FA Tryout. NW Mo.: In Cactus Bowl, was game’s best rusher, with 55 yards on 10 attempts. Also an effective receiver, with 26 yards on 2 catches. Good stiff-arm and nice quickness to outside, though he was primarily an inside runner. Average speed, but very good vision. Strong lower body and keeps feet moving after contact. Good hands as receiver. Average upper-body strength.
  14. Brandon Minor: Bears, UDFA. Mich.: Great size. Will compete with Bell for 4th RB job. Should win.
  15. Jamie McCoy: Rams, UDFA. Tex. A&M: FB size, but played TE in college. Good speed and upper-body strength. Average athleticism. Nice hands, leaping ability and overall athleticism. Similar to Dorin Dickerson, and may end up as H-back in NFL. Good moves after catch. In Texas vs. Nation practice, danced behind line too often. In game, showed good speed and change of direction skills for his size. Willing blocker but was overpowered in short yardage. Competing with Ogbonnaya for backup FB spot. May also compete with Hoomawanaui for TE spot.
  16. Rashawn Jackson: Panthers, UDFA. Va.: Showed good hands. Below-average speed. In Senior Bowl practices, was good at blitz pickup and doesn’t let up once he locks on as blocker. Keeps legs churning in short-yardage. Shows some agility in the open field. Should be starting FB right away, and has minimal fantasy relevance on only team to use its FB in NFL.
  17. Keiland Williams: Redskins, UDFA. LSU: Very good size. Good speed. Average athleticism and upper-body strength. DNP in bowl game — injured.Had reputation for fumbling.  In middle of very crowded depth chart, and likely to be cut or placed on practice squad.
  18. Dominique Lindsay: Titans, UDFA. E. Car.: Average height, but a little thin. Average strength, quickness, acceleration, and speed. Patient, with a good burst through the hole. Always heads downfield. Has good balance. In Texas vs. Nation practice, showed good effort as receiver, though not good routes. Will battle Stafon Johnson and Blount for 3rd RB role, but will probably be 4th RB or on practice squad.
  19. AJ Cooley: Jaguars, FA Tryout. Shorter Coll./Ga. Tech: Great size. In Texas vs. Nation practice, had a problem with fumbling. Also showed little vision and quickness. In game, was a disciplined and patient runner, but isn’t creative. Shows good ball security. Adequate speed. Runs a little upright. Adequate hands. Could stick as 4th RB, but doesn’t have NFL skills.
  20. Jacob Ramsey: Bengals, FA Tryout. Cincinnati: Good size. Sets up blockers well. Seldom used. Has quick feet and good body control.
  21. Andre Anderson: Bills, FA Tryout. Tulane: In Shrine Game practices, showed little burst and vision on inside runs, though it could be that he is just ultra-patient. Had a few dropped passes. On returns, shows good downhill instincts and tough running. Below-average track speed. Average upper-body strength. Very good athleticism. Not likely to make team.
  22. Chris Gronkowski: Cowboys, UDFA. Ariz.: Good size and strength. Adequate speed and quickness for the position. Mostly invisible during bowl game. Could stick as backup FB or TE, but not likely to be fantasy relevant.
  23. Toney Baker: Broncos, UDFA. N. Car. St.: Very good athleticism. Good speed for the size. Great upper-body strength. Average height and good bulk. In Texas vs. Nation practice, wasn’t a natural receiver, though he improved in the game. Didn’t look fast or strong enough to run inside and danced too much. Slow acceleration. Also fumbled in practice. Doesn’t keep feet moving after contact. Missed 2007 and 2008 seasons. May make team as 4th RB, but never fantasy relevant.
  24. John Connor: Jets, 5th round. Ky.: Traditional FB type. Great run blocker, though he lunges too much in pass protection. Late addition to Senior Bowl. Eventual replacement for Tony Richardson, but not fantasy relevant.
  25. Dennis Morris: Redskins, 6th round. La. Tech: TE bulk and FB height. Adequate hands. Invisible in Texas vs. the Nation game. Could stick as starting FB for team, but no fantasy relevance.
  26. Cory Jackson: Chargers, UDFA. Md.: Very late addition to the Senior Bowl. Scheduled for Texas vs. Nation game, but pulled out. Will compete with Brockel and Kyle Wilson for backup FB spot.
  27. Ryan Moya: Browns, UDFA. UCLA: Invisible during bowl game. H-back size. Also plays FB. In Shrine Game, played FB and looked strong in short-yardage situations. Kept feet churning after contact. Adequate receiver, though needs to catch with hands. Locks on as run blocker.
  28. Nick Tow-Arnett: Seahawks, UDFA. Minn.: Great FB size, but too short for a TE. Suspect hands, and lets ball get to his chest too often. Signed by Cowboys as FA in May, but waived in June. Signed by Seahawks early August
  29. Christian Ducre: Saints, UDFA. Miss. St.: Good size. Very good upper-body strength. Average speed, athleticism and quickness.
  30. Quinn Porter: Packers, UDFA. Stillman: At 6’1”, may be too tall. Slight frame. Average speed. Preseason All-SIAC First Team. In HBCU Game. Could be 4th RB, but has to beat Starks.

  45. Tervaris Johnson: Chiefs, UDFA. Miami: Training camp fodder.
  46. Richard Brockel: Chargers, UDFA. Boise St.: Also plays FB. Great FB size, but too short for a TE. Invisible or did not play during bowl game. Battling Cory Jackson for backup FB spot. Training camp fodder.
  47. Joseph Tronzo: Bengals, UDFA. Louisville: Bowling ball build. Surprising athleticism. Excellent upper-body strength. Above-average speed for the size. Said to be a good blocker, but not much of a threat otherwise.

2010 NFL Draft WR Rankings, 21-271

  1. Chris McGaha: FA. Ariz. St.: Average size and speed. Very good quickness, athleticism, and upper-body strength. Said to have excellent hands, though he didn’t look like a natural receiver at the Combine. Also didn’t look very smooth running. Invisible during bowl game. Was chosen for Senior Bowl, but withdrew. Have not seen enough on him. Recently had Lasik surgery. Excellent lower-body power. Signed as FA by Jaguars in May, but waived in July. (FA)
  2. Michael Moore: Lions, UDFA. Ga.: Good vision and field awareness. Very polished. Good after-catch moves. Good athleticism. Very good upper-body strength. Good track speed but average field speed. Willing blocker. Good route runner who gets good separation. Should displace Derrick Williams as #4 WR right away, and has #2 potential with only Burleson and Bryant Johnson between. (FA)
  3. Damola Adeniji: Raiders, FA. Ore. St.: Great size. Very good hands and good speed. Productive in bowl game. Strong and doesn’t go down with first contact. Was signed by Buccaneers, but cut in mid-May. Signed by Raiders in June and will battle for 5th or 6th spot on team.
  4. David Nelson: Bills, UDFA. Fla.: Very tall, but could add a little bulk. Good speed for the size. Tough to bring down. Athletic and quick. Clutch receiver who was Tebow’s go-to guy a lot of times in SEC title game. Fights for ball and adjusts well, using size. Good hands. Will fight Donald Jones and Naaman Roosevelt for last WR position, and should win. (FA)
  5. Seyi Ajirotutu: Chargers, UDFA. Fresno St.: Very good size, but was invisible during bowl game. Average speed. In Shrine Game practices, caught well outside of frame and had good speed and after-catch moves. Showed coachability. Performed well in red-zone drills. Nice verticals and concentration over the middle. Suddenly has fairly open depth chart ahead of him, and may be #4 WR on team, but likely never more than a #3. Will battle Jeremy Williams for spot, and should win. (FA)
  6. Armanti Edwards: Panthers, 3rd round. Appalachian St.: Small, run-first QB who will switch to WR in pros. Has moves and track speed of a WR. Above-average athleticism. Below-average upper-body strength. Good quickness and fair change-of-direction ability. Durability issues. Has potential as Wildcat QB and 3rd WR, but not very fantasy relevant. Could compete with Goodson for slot WR spot. (6)
  7. Scott Long: 49ers, UDFA. Louisville: Very good track speed, athleticism, and quickness. Good size. In Texas vs. Nation practice, showed good route-running ability and seemed polished. Average tracking ability. OK sideline control. Adjusts well to ball, but short-armed it over the middle. Battling Hodge and Kyle Williams for last WR spot. Likely never more than a #4 WR on team. (FA)
  8. Jeremy Williams: Chargers, UDFA. Tulane: Average size. In Senior Bowl practices, was solid blocker. Bobbled some passes but showed crisp routes and good separation ability. Above-average track speed. Fumbled in Senior Bowl practice drills. Runs under control. Will battle Ajirotutu for #4 WR spot, but will probably be #5. (7)
  9. Kerry Meier: Falcons, 5th round. Kan.: Good size, speed and quickness for the size. Former QB. In Shrine Game practices, showed adequate speed and explosiveness. Ran good routes and presented a big target. Nimble feet and sideline awareness, but needs to fix footwork on some routes. Strong hands and held onto football even after big hits in practice. In game, though, dropped a big pass. Invited to Combine as a FB, but has lined up at WR on Falcons in minicamps, where he impressed. Versatile, and this may help him stick on team.
  10. Alric Arnett: Broncos, UDFA. W.V.: Good height, but a little skinny. Average speed, but great quickness. Inconsistent hands. Showed quick release and burst off line in Shrine Game practices, but didn’t move smoothly out of route breaks. Seemed smoother in game, though. Showed concentration on off-target passes. Willing blocker. Thomas, Royal, Decker and Stokley are ahead of him on depth chart, so not likely to be fantasy relevant any time soon.
  11. Jared Perry: 49ers, UDFA. Mo.: Lanky build. Fights for ball, but has very inconsistent hands that seem to look better in practices than in pressure situations. Hands were iffy in bowl game, then they looked better in Texas vs. Nation practice. Then in the Texas vs. the Nation game, he high-pointed but bobbled a pass. Showed quickness and good body control on the sidelines. Nice downfield blocker. Will battle Kyle Williams, Hodge, and Long for 5th WR spot. Likely destined for practice squad.
  12. David Gettis: Panthers, 6th round. Baylor: Great size, big hands and good speed for the size. In Texas vs. Nation practice, ran good routes and showed good double moves. Showed good hands when he actually uses them, but he body-catches too much. Didn’t show good body control. Uses size well to shield defenders. Invisible in game. Will battle Oliver Young for 3rd WR spot, and should win. Has potential fantasy relevance on receiver-starved team.
  13. Marc Mariani: Titans, 7th round. Montana: Average size. Tough receiver who seems slow on the field, but has average track speed. Average athleticism. Below-average upper-body strength. Has returner skills. Good concentration and hands in traffic. Uncoverable in D1 Championship. Is a willing blocker. Will battle Sewell for 5th WR spot on team, and should make it. Not fantasy relevant behind Britt, Williams, Gage, and Washington.
  14. Zurial “Jeff” Moturi: Packers, UDFA. Tex.-El Paso: Slightly below-average size. Very good speed and quickness. Average athleticism. Good upper-body strength. Runs under control and gives good effort. Uses quickness to get good separation. Very good hands. Has returner experience. In game, showed good balance. Could stick as 5th WR, but not likely to be fantasy relevant with so many WRs ahead of him on depth chart.
  15. Chastin West: Packers, UDFA. Fresno St.: Above-average size. Below-average speed and athleticism. Invisible during bowl game. In Texas vs. Nation practice, showed good verticals and some quickness getting out of routes. In game, caught well with full arm extension. Will compete with Moturi for last spots on team.
  16. Trindon Holliday: Texans, 6th round. LSU: Very undersized. WR/KR/RB type all-purpose player who is expected to be mostly a returner and backup WR. Ultra-quick change of direction. Not very strong — easy to bring down. In Texas vs. the Nation practice, showed slightly inconsistent hands. Quickness to run nice routes, and has incredibly fast track speed, but doesn’t seem fast off the line in pads. Good sideline body control. Needs work on ball security. Probably best served as return specialist in NFL and occasional 3rd-down back. Makes smart decisions as returner. Nice balance. Showed good concentration on passes. Will compete with Jacoby Jones for returner job, and may be kept as Slaton’s backup, but not likely to make much of a splash. Possible practice-squad player.
  17. Leroy Vann: 49ers, UDFA. Fla. A&M: Undersized. Explosive returner who mostly played CB in college. Returned punt for TD in HBCU game, but that was against players who don’t play special teams so much. Still, he was very successful at it in college, with 5-6 return TDs in all. Average upper-body strength. Above-average athleticism. Will compete with Ginn for returner job. If he doesn’t win that competition, he will likely be cut.
  18. Brandon Banks: Redskins, UDFA. Kan. St.: Very small size. Though fairly productive as WR in college, likely to be a returner in pros, and he had 4 TDs in 2009.
  19. Shea “Shay” Hodge: Redskins, UDFA. Miss.: Average size, speed and acceleration. Pretty quick, though, and uses that to run crisp routes and beat press coverage. Suspect hands and game situation awareness. In Senior Bowl practices, showed ability to track passes over his shoulder and head. Was in 49ers camp as FA tryout, but signed by Redskins in mid-May. Will battle for 5th WR spot, but likely never fantasy relevant.
  20. Andrew Brewer: Patriots, FA Tryout. Northwestern: Great effort guy with great hands. Good size and nice acceleration. Good speed for the size. Above-average athleticism and upper-body strength.
  21. Marquis Hamilton: Vikings, UDFA. Iowa St.: Tough to bring down. Built large like an H-back, but has quick feet. Can make the circus catch.
  22. Preston Parker: Buccaneers, UDFA. N. Ala.: Good quickness. Slightly below-average size and speed. Below-average athleticism. In Texas vs. Nation practice, was out with an injury day 2. Played in game and showed inconsistent hands. Has experience as a returner. Rounds off routes. Has had several legal troubles. Not likely to make the team except as last WR or practice squad.
  23. Donald Jones: Bills, UDFA. Youngstown St.: Average size. Late addition to Senior Bowl, but didn’t show much. In Texas vs. Nation practice, didn’t show soft hands. Did show good sideline awareness and body control, but ran mediocre routes. Invisible in game. Competing with Easley, Roosevelt, and Nelson for spots, but there are plenty of spots to go around on this team. Still, not likely to make the team.
  24. Kevin Jurovich: 49ers, UDFA. San Jose St.: Slightly below-average size. Good speed, quickness, and athleticism. Said to have good hands and run crisp routes. In Texas vs. Nation practice, was injured first day. Will never be fantasy relevant on this team.Signed and waived by Eagles, then picked up by 49ers in August.
  25. Kyle Williams: 49ers, 6th round. Ariz. St.: Below-average size. Has small hands, but they seemed fluid at the Combine. Needs work on tracking. In Texas vs. the Nation practices, showed good polish, speed, routes and agility. Invisible in TvN game. Has baseball option. Son of Kenny Williams, GM of the White Sox. Battling Jared Perry, Shay Hodge and Kyle Williams for last WR spot. Likely never more than a #4 WR on team.
  26. Verran Tucker: Chiefs, UDFA. Cal: Good size, but thin lower body. Good acceleration. Average speed. Above-average athleticism. Below-average upper-body strength. Showed he can take a hit, having good concentration. In Shrine Game practices, showed good hands and route-running ability, though lacked body control. Hurt a hamstring the third day and didn’t play in the game. Signed as UDFA in May, but released in late July and signed by KC.
  27. Naaman Roosevelt: Bills, UDFA. Buffalo: In Shrine Game practices, showed below-average burst and separation off line. Routes aren’t crisp — almost resulted in INT in Shrine Game. Adequate hands and catches with body too often. Inconsistent concentration. Showed good double moves and speed later in week, but ran a 4.6 at his pro day. Average athleticism and upper-body strength. Seems to fall down at first hint of contact. Will fight Donald Jones, Easley and Naaman Roosevelt for #2WR position , but there are plenty of spots to go around on this team. Still, not likely to make the team.
  28. Stephen Williams: Cardinals, UDFA. Toledo: Great size and very good track speed. In Texas vs. Nation practice, had good and strong hands. Not known for running good routes, but this is improving greatly. Poor body control and tracking ability. Invisible in game. Should compete for 4th WR spot, but should stick no matter what. Not fantasy relevant yet, but may be by 2012.
  29. Greg Bolling: Wyo.: Tough receiver with good speed. Presents good red-zone target. (FA)
  30. Gerald Baptiste: S. Miss.: Possession receiver with average size. Good speed. Good change of direction. Good hands in traffic. Saints have shown interest.
  31. Juamorris Stewart: FA. Southern: Average size. Gives good effort. Good hands and smooth moves, but below-average routes. Very good sideline foot control and is tough to bring down. Signed as UDFA by Cardinals, but released in mid-July.
  32. Terrence Austin: Redskins, 7th round. UCLA: Good returner skills. Below-average size and slight frame. Very good speed. Average acceleration, but very quick moves. Easy to bring down. Runs upright, but has good sideline foot control. Replaced Verran Tucker in Shrine Game mid-week. Should compete for returner job, and may stick as 5th WR.
  33. Nyan Boateng: Giants, UDFA. Cal.: Average size. Below-average speed. Average athleticism and upper-body strength. Invisible during bowl game. Has had several legal troubles and was kicked off Florida’s team before transferring to California. Tried out for 49ers and Giants in spring. Signed by Giants early in training camp.
  34. Tony “Trey” Stross: Texans, UDFA. Iowa: Injured late in season, and barely played in bowl game, though was leading receiver during season. Injury-prone throughout career. Runs good routes and shows good feel for the 1st-down marker. UDFA for Texans, but put on IR in mid June.
  35. Derrick Townsel: Jaguars, UDFA. Murray St.: Tried out for Redskins and Texans, but was signed by neither. Signed by Jaguars in early August.

  41. Patrick Honeycutt: Broncos, UDFA. Mid. Tenn. St.: Average speed and quickness. Good hands and effort. Very crowded depth chart, and likely won’t make team.
  42. Max Komar: Cardinals, UDFA. Idaho: Thick build, but not very physical. Uses quickness and acceleration to beat jams. Terrible hands during bowl game — dropped at least 5 passes. Not NFL caliber.
  43. Rocky Ross: FA. Cent. Fla.: Average speed and acceleration. Good hands. Tough — good concentration in traffic. Can take a hit. Tried out for Jaguars but wasn’t signed. Signed with Florida of UFL but retired in mid-August.

2010 NFL Draft TE Rankings, 21-81

  1. Jameson Konz: Seahawks, 7th round. Kent St.: Great size and HB speed. Ultra-athletic and very versatile. Has played LB, WR, and H-back. Will battle Baker, McCoy and Morrah for backup TE spot behind Carlson. Likely to make team, but not sure of role.
  2. Nate Byham: 49ers, 6th round. Pitt: Good size. Average speed and athleticism. Below-average upper-body strength, but is still a very good run blocker. Wasn’t used much as receiver in career, but showed good receiving ability in Shrine Game practices. Either injured or invisible during Shrine Game. With Vernon Davis on roster, will probably not be fantasy relevant, but should be their main blocking TE, and does have some receiving skill.
  3. Anthony McCoy: Seahawks, 6th round. USC: DNP in bowl. In Senior Bowl practices, showed great size and strength. Soft hands. Doesn’t show a good anchor for blocking. Reportedly failed drug test at Combine for marijuana. Will battle Baker, Konz and Morrah for backup TE spot behind Carlson. Likely to make team since Carroll was his college coach. (5)
  4. Mickey Shuler: Vikings, 7th round. Penn St.: Very good speed and excellent athleticism. Strong upper body, and, though he only has average size, he is still a good run blocker. Mostly invisible as receiver in career, but team had Quarless as their pass-catching TE. Could potentially make team as replacement for Kleinsasser, but should definitely make it as 3rd TE. Not likely to be fantasy relevant, though.
  5. Brody Eldridge: Colts, 5th round. Okla.: Good size, speed, athleticism, and upper-body strength. DNP in bowl game — injured. Has #2 TE potential behind Clark.
  6. Nathan Overbay: Broncos, UDFA. E. Wash.: Average size. In Shrine Game practices, showed good run-blocking effort and good concentration over middle. Good athleticism and straight-ahead speed to get open down seam. Below-average upper-body strength. Will compete for 3rd TE spot, and should win.
  7. Logan Paulsen: Redskins, UDFA. UCLA: Good TE size and very tough to bring down. Suspect hands. Will compete for 3rd TE spot on team, but not likely to be fantasy relevant behind Cooley and Davis.
  8. Steven Maneri: Texans, UDFA. Temple: Great size and uses it well as blocker and in red zone. Catches with hands, not body. Tough to bring down. A late addition to Texas vs. the Nation. In practice, showed a lack of speed and quickness. May have size to move to tackle in NFL, and should try to considering the crowded TE depth chart on the Texans. Not likely to be fantasy relevant if he even makes the team.
  9. Fendi Onobun: Rams, 6th round. Houston: Good height and average bulk. Very good speed and excellent quickness and overall athleticism. Below-average upper-body strength. Wasn’t used in college much and was invisible during bowl game. Had problem with drops at Rams OTAs. Will compete with Hoomanawanui for #2 TE spot on roster. May be fantasy relevant by 2011.
  10. Riar Geer: Broncos, UDFA. Colo.: Average size. Good speed. In Shrine Game practices, showed equal abilities as FB and H-back. Showed good effort for passes away from body. Nice blocker who can sustain once he locks on. Needs to get better at finding zones. Will compete with Overbay for 3rd TE spot, or may stick as FB.
  11. Steven Pfahler: Titans, UDFA. Mont.: Caught well in D1 Championship. Average speed and athleticism. Good upper-body strength. Should compete for #3 TE position on Titans. Not fantasy relevant with Scaife and Cook on team, though.
  12. Jeff Cumberland: Jets, UDFA. Ill.: Average size, but very good speed for a TE. Good athleticism and upper-body strength. Not used much at Illinois, and reportedly body-catches too much. May make it as #2 TE.
  13. Dedrick Epps: Chargers, 7th round. Miami: H-back size. Average speed and athleticism. Invisible during bowl game. In Texas vs. Nation practice, showed good blocking ability. Finds soft spot in zone and has soft hands. Out with injury day 2. Will compete with Brockel for backup TE spot and should win. Has fantasy relevance if Gates is injured.
  14. Gerald Harris: Titans, UDFA. Miss.: Average size. Either did not play in bowl or was invisible. In Texas vs. Nation practice, showed willingness to go over the middle. Finds soft zones, but doesn’t adjust well to errant passes. Poor balance and agility. Adequate blocker. Below-average speed and burst. Will compete with Craig Stevens for 3rd TE spot. No fantasy relevance.
  15. Scott Sicko: Cowboys, UDFA. N.H.: Average size. Very good speed. Good athleticism and upper-body strength. Dedication to football is suspect after first refusing to sign as UDFA.
  16. Jeron Mastrud: Buccaneers, UDFA. Kan.: Average size. Recovering from right foot surgery, but was durable in college. Average athleticism. Below-average upper-body strength may limit him as a blocker. Training camp fodder.
  17. Ali Villanueva: Bengals, FA Tryout. Army: Huge size (6’9” 280 lbs.). Converted from OT before 2009 season, so should be a good blocker, though may be too tall to get blocking leverage in pros. In Shrine Game, showed soft hands and adequate speed. Willing to dive for ball.
  18. Mike Owen: Jets, FA Tryout. Syracuse: Average size. Soft hands. Not much of a blocker.
  19. T.C. Drake: Chiefs, UDFA. Ky.: Training camp fodder.

  29. Mitch Ryan: Giants, FA Tryout. San Diego:

  32. Jesson Salyards: Wyo.: H-back size. Catches well with hands.
  33. Leroy Banks: FA. So. Miss.: Below-average size and upper-body strength for the position. Good speed and athleticism. Training camp fodder. Was in Falcons minicamp, but cut mid-May.
  34. Derrick Catlett: Iowa St.: Slow, but with strong lower body. Fakes well to get into position. Great run blocker.
  35. Richard Gordon: Miami: Invisible during bowl game. A little short for a TE, but has good bulk. May be blocking TE at NFL level.

  37. Remo Gay: Ark. Pine Bluff: A little slow, but tough to bring down.
  38. Kazeem Alli: Cincinnati: Short for a TE, but bulky enough. Size may be a benefit in getting blocking leverage. Able to pick his way to open zones.

2012 NFL Draft Positional Rankings

Positional Rankings

Posted in Fantasy Football, football | Tagged , , , , | 2 Comments

QB Bo Levi Mitchell, Eastern Washington

Below-average size. Good hand size. Couldn’t work out at his school’s Pro Day, but will work out at SMU Pro Day.

Positives: Smart runner. Quick decisions. Throws a catchable pass. Moves away from rush well. Pretty good decisions. Accurate on timing routes. Fairly accurate deep as well as on the run.

Negatives: Below-average speed. Erratic mechanics — throws falling backwards often. Not a natural runner. Below-average arm strength. Mostly a touch passer. Eyeballs receivers. Slightly long windup.

Projection: Undrafted, but may stick on a roster as long-term project or practice squad player. Likely never more than a backup, though.

WR Tyler Shoemaker, Boise State

Buccaneers, UDFA. Boise St.: Above-average size. Below-average hand size. Ravens have shown interest.

Positives: Fair body control. Uses athleticism to get open on short routes. Above-average track speed and acceleration. Adequate upper-body strength. Generally good hands. Good speed. Uses hands to catch and can go up and get it. Hard-working as blocker. Very productive in 2011. Adequate upper-body strength.

Negatives: Has some strange lapses in concentration and seems to drop clutch passes. Suspect route-running ability.

Projection: Behind Mike Williams, Vincent Jackson, Arrelious Benn, Dezmon Briscoe, and Preston Parker, so is probably battling for the last WR spot on team. Likely bench WR who has the skills to be a quality contributor for some teams.

QB John Brantley, Florida

Ravens, UDFA. Fla.: Adequate size. Above-average hand size. Ravens have shown interest.

Positives: Goes through progressions. Adequate velocity and arm strength. Good on timing patterns and intermediate routes.  Nice touch on intermediate routes. Gets set up in pocket very quickly. Has some under-center experience. Knows when to throw ball away. Adequate track speed. Slow change-of-direction skills and burst.

Negatives: Most of his experience is out of the shotgun. Doesn’t read coverages well. Inconsistent mechanics in pocket. Questionable pocket presence and doesn’t sense rush well. Long delivery.

Projection: Is probably 4th on Raven s depth chart now behind Flacco, Taylor, and Painter, but should be able to beat Painter for last spot. Not likely ever an NFL-quality starter, though.

2009 NFL Draft TE Rankings

Here’s a look back at how I ranked the TEs in the 2009 draft class. A few big reaches here — like Shawn Nelson at 2, Cornelius Ingram at 4 and Chase Coffman at 5. But in his third season, Jared Cook is finally starting to show his #1-ranked TE status wasn’t all hype.

  1. Jared Cook: Titans, 3rd round .Good pass catcher, but only average blocker. Wide receiver speed and best vertical leap of any TE this year. Receiver size, and needs to bulk up a bit. Has some potential in Titans offense, but probably not more than top-10, even with his added goal-line receiving ability. Long arms were noticed at minicamp, and this could mean better blocking. Impressed at minicamp with receiving skills. Expected to be a Dallas Clark type being moved inside, outside and in backfield. Being used in goal-line packages right away, and should be effective there.
  2. Shawn Nelson: Bills, 4th round. Athletic and fluid, with great top-end speed. Creates separation out of breaks. Uses long arms and hands to catch. Great hands. Is a good blocker, but needs to add bulk. Great during Senior Bowl practices, but invisible in the game. Going to a team without a viable starting TE makes him an immediate contributor, and his blocking ability means he won’t leave the field as much, boosting his opportunities.
  3. Brandon Pettigrew: Lions, 1st round. Big frame and good blocker. Jason Witten type prototype TE. Invisible at Senior Bowl, and didn’t do well at Combine. AAHM. Goes to a team that can use him in the middle of the field, and his blocking ability will keep him on-field most downs. Has immediate fantasy relevance, with top-five potential.
  4. Cornelius Ingram: Eagles, 5th round. Undersized, and was often used as a slot receiver. Has H-back bulk. Good hands. Lack of blocking experience may limit his field time. Injured ACL in early August and will miss 2009, though he looked great in training camp. History of injuries may be his downfall.
  5. Chase Coffman: Bengals, 3rd round. Seems very slow on field, but has good hands, and caught a lot of passes in a spread offense. Didn’t block much in college. AAHM. Could flourish in Bengals offense, but needs to learn how to block to stay on the field. Kelly injury puts him atop depth chart.
  6. Travis Beckum: Giants, 3rd round. Fast, strong, and fluid. Not a blocker. Only 235 lbs. Needs to bulk up to get to H-back size, which is where the Giants want to use him. Will be behind Boss for 2009, but may see field in goal-line packages right away. Unless he bulks up and learns to block, he will probably always be a fantasy backup. But has versatility to create mismatches. Missed all of minicamp with hamstring problem.
  7. James Casey: Texans, 5th round. H-Back size and speed. Very good athlete, playing 7 positions in college — even QB. Good hands and 2nd-best TE vertical at Combine. Not a blocker. Will probably play fullback for Texans, since they already have Owen Daniels at TE, but could catch a lot of passes at the position in an explosive offense.
  8. Bear Pascoe: 49ers, 5th round. Reads defenses and finds open space. Good hands in traffic. Good blocker. Runs well for size. Low upper-body strength. Could be #2 TE right away, and his blocking ability could keep him on field in goal-line package. But with Vernon Davis ahead of him, is not fantasy relevant. However, was commended for all-around play by 49ers coaches, and they are pushing him hard in practice.
  9. Richard Quinn: Broncos, 2nd round. AAHM. All-purpose TE who can block, run and catch. 4.75 speed. Good size.  Could start for Broncos by 2010, and should be on their goal-line package right away. Could be decent fantasy starter by 2010.
  10. Darius Hill: Bengals, FA. In camp as a tryout, but looked good enough to be signed by the team after minicamp. Kelly injury means he has a good chance to make the team, but he’s not fantasy relevant by a long shot.
  11. Davon Drew: Ravens, 5th round. Good TE size. Good speed and quickness for a TE. Will battle for #3 TE spot, but not fantasy relevant until Heap leaves.
  12. Zach Miller : Jaguars, 5th round. H-back size and speed. Good athleticism. 3-year QB and 1-yr TE in college. Great runner. Compares to Jay Novacek. Could be #2 TE to Marcedes Lewis, and may be fantasy worthy by 2010, especially if Lewis gets hurt. Has been used in Wildcat formation in OTAs.
  13. Dan Gronkowski: Lions, 7th round. Excellent athlete who posted some of the best numbers at the Combine. Behind Pettigrew, though, won’t be a starter for a while.
  14. John Phillips: Cowboys, 6th round. Has been a good blocker, and caught 48 passes as a senior, but was invisible at Senior Bowl. May be #3 TE behind Witten and Bennett, but could be #2 if Bennett is cut due to being an idiot.
  15. Cameron Morrah: Seahawks, 7th round. Excellent speed, quickness and strength.  Not seen as much of a blocker. Behind Carlson and Owens, may not see much time, but has potential in goal-line packages.
  16. Jared Bronson: Dolphins, FA. Targeted often in Shrine Game. Good blocker and hands. Average speed. Probably never fantasy-worthy, and didn’t even report to Dolphins training camp. Nobody knows why.
  17. John Nalbone: Dolphins, 5th round. Good TE size, and great speed for the position. Average upper-body strength. Not more than #2 TE on Dolphins, and probably never fantasy-worthy.
  18. Kory Sperry: Chargers, FA. Very athletic – some of the best Combine numbers. WR size, and needs to bulk up. Potential #3 TE in San Diego.
  19. Anthony Hill: Texans, 4th round. Big target, but bad hands. Was invisible at Senior Bowl. Behind Owen Daniels at the position, won’t have much of a receiving potential. Also, James Casey is probably the 2nd option at TE for receiving. Likely to just be a blocker.
  20. J’Nathan Bullock: Jets, FA. Large for an H-back, small for a TE. Good hands, and was a very athletic basketball player. Hasn’t played football since high school, though, but has good chance as 3rd TE on team due to upside. Not fantasy relevant yet.
  21. Brandon Myers: Raiders, 6th round. Good size, speed, and athleticism, but will be behind Miller in Oakland. Not fantasy relevant.
  22. Ryan Purvis: Buccaneers, FA. Strong, good hands, and good size. A little slow. Probably has to beat out Jerramy Stevens or John Gilmore to make the team, giving him an outside chance.
  23. Kevin Brock: Jets, FA. Great size and speed and athleticism. Good upper-body strength. Chance to be #3 TE on team.
  24. Jerimiah Wurzbacher: FA.  Good size, speed, and athleticism. Cut by Chargers.
  25. Rob Myers: Dolphins, FA. H-back size and speed. Has been compared to Chris Cooley. Missed 2008 season. Waived by Jets on 5/28 and signed by Dolphins
  26. Andrew Davie: Panthers, FA. Good size and speed. Mostly a blocker, but is working on hands. Also a long snapper. Was waived by Jets after OTAs, but claimed by Carolina. Is not fantasy relevant, and probably won’t ever be more than third TE on Panthers. He’s a blocker and not much else. May make team as long snapper and blocking TE.
  27. Branden Ledbetter: Playing with UFL. Western MI. Good hands and fair speed. But fumbled at Texas vs. the Nation game.
  28. Fendi Onobun: Ariz. Great size, but is a basketball player who has never played football. Viewed as an athletic long-term project.
  29. Tyrell Williams: Stephen F Austin. Good TE size and speed. Needs to get stronger upper-body.
  30. Moses Hinton: Fla. Int’l. Good size and OK speed. Good athleticism, but below-average strength for a TE.
  31. Tate Casey: Fla. Good size and athleticism, but 5.0 speed.
