TE Vance McDonald, Rice

49ers, 2nd round. Rice: Good size. Above-average hand size.

Positives: Above-average hands and can extend. Finds spots in zone. Strangely dangerous after the catch. Solid run blocker. Runs smooth routes and uses physicality to get open.

Negatives: Was a WR in college who will transition to TE in the pros. Suspect concentration and tends to take eyes off of ball to head upfield. Injured toe in October and missed several games.

Projection: Will form a very nice 1-2 punch at TE on the 49ers with Vernon Davis. As long as Davis is healthy, though, McDonald will always be their second choice. Draft as a TE4 with TE2 potential.

TE Gavin Escobar, San Diego State

Cowboys, 2nd round. San Diego St.: Junior who has declared for 2013 NFL Draft. Good size.

Positives: Above-average run blocker who stays latched on. Above-average hands catcher. Fairly nimble after the catch.

Negatives: Comes from a small program and may not be ready for the NFL. Below-average speed.

Projection: Immediately becomes Jason Witten’s heir-apparent but will also find his way on the field a lot right away to give Tony Romo two solid intermediate targets. Should see some level of immediate success, but is probably a few years away from reaching his potential, which is probably as a top-10 TE. Draft as a long-term hold but with TE3 production right away.

TE Zach Ertz, Stanford

Eagles, 2nd round. Stanford: Junior who has declared for 2013 NFL Draft.

Positives: Good hands and extends well. Good routes and is quick in and out of breaks. Good body control and adjusts well. A natural receiver. Adequate overall athleticism. Above-average speed.

Projection: Enters a crowded depth chart with Brent Celek, James Casey and Evan Moore (and Derek Carrier), but he’ll probably be in heavy rotation, especially on two-TE sets. Draft as a TE3 with TE2 potential. Expect a lot of inconsistent production.

2013 NFL Draft Positional Rankings

Here is where you can access all of the information I’ve put together related to the 2013 NFL draft.

TE Tyler Eifert, Notre Dame

Bengals, 1st round. Notre Dame: Good size.

Positives: Good hands. Good effort after the catch. Very good body control. Strong after catch. Holds passes after hits. Very good downfield blocker. Also lines up outside. Good concentration in traffic. Can high-point passes — should be good red-zone target. Above-average routes. Solid run blocker and gives good effort.

Negatives: Though he’s improved as a run blocker, that isn’t his strong suit, and he isn’t overpowering there.

Projection: He joins a team with TEs Jermaine Gresham, Orson Charles, Alex Smith and Richard Quinn — so he’s going to have a hard time getting enough snaps. But this focus on intermediate targets will help QB Andy Dalton out a lot — especially with AJ Green on the outside. You can still draft as a TE2 with TE1 potential, but expect inconsistent production with so many TE targets to go around.

Ranking the TEs in the 2013 Draft

The 2013 tight end class is a pretty strong one — especially if you’re looking for H-backs and other receiving TEs. I don’t think there are any Tony Gonzalezes, Rob Gronkowskis, or Jimmy Grahams in it, but there’s some quality here.

The most successful dynasty football target will probably be Tyler Eifert from Notre Dame., but Kelce, Ertz, Escobar, Fauria, and McDonald are also very good receivers with varying degrees of blocking ability (which may or may not be important to the teams that draft them. And then you have Michael Williams, who is one of the best blocking TEs I’ve seen in a long time. He, Dion Sims, and Kyle Juszczyk should also find a lot of playing time in the NFL.

  1. Tyler Eifert, Notre Dame
  2. Travis Kelce, Cincinnati
  3. Zach Ertz, Stanford
  4. Gavin Escobar, San Diego State
  5. Joseph Fauria, UCLA
  6. Vance McDonald, Rice
  7. Michael Williams, Alabama
  8. Dion Sims, Michigan State
  9. Kyle Juszczyk, Harvard
  10. Chris Pantale, Boston College
  11. Mychal Rivera, Tennessee
  12. Matt Furstenburg, Maryland
  13. Luke Willson, Rice
  14. Ryan Otten, San Jose State
  15. Evan Landi, South Florida
  16. Jack Doyle, Western Kenticky
  17. Jordan Reed, Florida
  18. Benjamin Cotton, Nebraska
  19. MarQueis Gray, Minnesota
  20. Corey Fuller, Virginia Tech
  21. Blake Williamson, California (Pennsylvania)
  22. Marcel Jensen, Fresno State

WR Justin Hunter, Tennessee

Titans, 2nd round. Tenn.: Junior who has declared for 2013 NFL Draft. Great height, but slim frame. Average hand size.

Positives: Good speed for the size. Excellent explosiveness and vertical leap. Elite athleticism. Adequate hands. Can high-point off-target passes. Holds ball fairly well when a hit’s coming. Adjusts well to off-target passes and shows above-average concentration on tipped passes. Adequate routes and is quick out of breaks. Good deep separation. Willing downfield blocker.

Negatives: ACL tear in 2011. Below-average lateral quickness. Though his hands are generally good, he drops some wide-open passes. Some trouble with fast passes. Doesn’t offer much resistance when cornered after the catch. Not hard to bring down after the catch and often just seems to fall on his own.

Projection: Will probably be strictly an outside WR on the Titans, with Britt (if healthy and head on straight) as the WR1 and Kendall Wright in the slot. I’m guessing Hunter will actually be the third WR target on the team, though his superior athleticism, speed and size may let him make an immediate splash — and even more of a splash if Britt misses time. His ability to adjust will help when Jake Locker throws it erratically, but his limitations over the middle will probably limit his ceiling. Draft as a WR3 with WR2 upside.

WR Keenan Allen, California

Chargers, 3rd round. Cal.: Good size. Great hand size. Junior who has declared for 2013 NFL Draft.

Positives: Adequate speed. Above-average acceleration. Willing to sacrifice his body a bit for extra yards. Solid routes and gets in and out of breaks cleanly. Above-average concentration on contested passes. Heads upfield quickly after the catch. Uses physicality to get yards after the catch. Above-average vision in the open field. Quick enough to weave through traffic and agile enough to make people miss in the open field. Above-average hands.

Negatives: Will short-arm some passes over the middle. Doesn’t break many tackles. Reportedly failed a drug test at Combine, but details seem iffy. Injured PCL in fall 2012 and still hadn’t completely healed by April 2013.

Projection: Will step in immediately as a starter on Chargers and will compete for targets with Robert Meachem and Vincent Brown and Antonio Gates (when healthy). Draft as WR3 with WR2 eventual upside.

WR Chad Bumphis, Mississippi State

Below-average height, but adequate bulk. Below-average hand size.

Positives: Above-average hands and can extend well. Fairly crisp routes. Adequate speed. Above-average acceleration. Good body control and concentration — adjusts to errant passes very well. Moves well after the catch. Will fight for extra yards. Good concentration on contested passes. Can hold ball with big hit. Adequate upper-body strength. Versatile — was also used as a Wildcat QB in college.

Negatives: Lacks the change-of-direction ability to make quick open-field cuts. Arrested for disorderly conduct in January 2012.

Projection: Round 3. Draft as an eventual WR3.

WR Da’Rick Rogers, Tennessee Tech

Junior who has declared for 2013 NFL Draft. Good size. Average hand size.

Positives: Excellent athleticism. Agile and has some YAC ability. Above-average speed and acceleration for the size. Adequate hands. Above-average routes — fairly quick into breaks. Above-average body control and adjusts to passes fairly well. Above-average vertical leap.

Negatives: Below-average upper-body strength. Needs to learn to help QB on scramble drill. Character red flag: Transferred from Tennessee in 2012 after being suspended for failing drug test and run-ins with staff.

Projection: Round 4. Is like the poor man’s Cordarrelle Patterson. Has the athleticism and route running to be able to get open fairly consistently in the NFL but needs to get stronger and stay clean. May not make an immediate impact but could eventually become a solid WR2 or WR3.
