Ranking the WRs in the 2012 NFL Draft

Updated 4/30/2012

The 2012 WR class is a very deep group. It doesn’t have the level of talent at the top that the 2011 class did, though — with AJ Green and Julio Jones as two of the best rookie WRs of the past decade.

As far as immediate help, I’d say there are only a few choices, though — Blackmon, Floyd, Hill and maybe Kendall Wright. But guys like Rueben Randle, Nick Toon, Mohammad Sanu, Marvin Jones, and Alshon Jeffrey could become at least WR2s in the next few years. The top 15 or so are likely to be valuable WR2 or WR3-level players on most moderately sized dynasty-league rosters. And I’m keeping my eyes on anyone in the top 30 of this list because they could easily become contributors.

  1. Justin Blackmon, Oklahoma State, Jaguars
  2. Stephen Hill, Georgia Tech, Jets
  3. Michael Floyd, Notre Dame, Cardinals
  4. Alshon Jeffery, South Carolina, Bears
  5. Kendall Wright, Baylor, Titans

RB Lance Dunbar, North Texas

Cowboys, UDFA. N. Tex.:

Positives: Above-average burst and speed. Adequate vision. Nice leg drive. Consistently productive in college. Gets low and finishes runs with pop.

Negatives: Suspect balance. Suspect hands, and ball gets to body too often.

Projection: Enters camp as 6th RB, and will compete with Phillip Tanner for last spot on team. May stick as practice squad player, but is good enough to be a part-time NFL contributor.

RB Lampford Mark, Nevada

Good height, but below-average bulk. Below-average hand size.

Positives: Very decisive one-cut inside runner. Above-average quickness and change-of-direction skills. Willing pass blocker. Finishes runs with power when he can initiate the contact. Adequate hands. Above-average speed. Runs smoothly. Fair vision.

Negatives: Runs a little upright. Gets caught going through the line a lot. Doesn’t push pile for yards. Hurt ACL in 2010.

Projection: Undrafted. Does a lot of things well and would likely stick on a roster if given a chance. Watch where he lands and keep an eye on his preseason performances.

RB Travaris Cadet, Appalachian State

Saints, UDFA. Appalachian St.: Very good height, but seems thin. More a WR build. Former transfer from Toledo and Pearl River CC. Dolphins and 49ers have shown interest.

Positives: Athletic and elusive in open field. Versatile — played several positions in college. Above-average speed and burst. Fair hands.

Negatives: Seems indecisive as a KR.

Projection: May have a future as a returner and offensive jack of all trades who should stick on a roster. Not likely to be a fantasy producer, though. Could stick on Saints as 5th RB and back up Sproles.

RB Jermaine Thomas, Florida State

Good height, but WR bulk.

Positives: Above-average speed. Keeps legs moving after contact. Patient and follows blocks. Above-average elusiveness.

Negatives: Suspect ball security. Runs slightly off balance. Arrested a couple of times in 2011 offseason. Doesn’t run with much power.

Projection: Undrafted. May get a camp invite, but likely won’t stick.
