Ryan Malleck, TE, Virginia Tech – 2016

Postseason Events: Shrine Game and NFL Combine.

Positives: Was a redshirt senior with solid experience. He has above-average height and adequate bulk for the position, with adequate hand size. In general, his hands are adequate. He runs with adequate track speed, though his game speed isn’t as good. He was athletic enough to often get split out as a wide receiver. Above-average body control and effort on off-target passes. Above-average run blocker when he can just drive straight ahead. As a blocker down the field, he is at least willing and will get in the way of defenders. Above-average vertical leap and lower body explosiveness in Combine drills.

Negatives: His hands are usually good enough, though he fought the ball a lot during Combine drills. He needs to get lower for better leverage as a downfield blocker. Below-average game speed. Needs to complete his hitch routes to get separation from coverage. Below-average upper body strength. He tore his left labrum in August 2013 and redshirted season.

Projection: Undrafted free agent. I would give him a Round 7 grade due to his size, athleticism and not-terrible blocking ability. He could stick around as a special teamer or practice squad candidate.
